What are unsightly veins?
These benign vascular lesions include enlarged blood vessels and capillaries that appear on the surface of the skin as splotches, dots, bulges and spider shapes. They can show up in a variety of colors ranging from red to blue to purple. Weakness in the walls and valves of the veins cause blood to stagnate rather than to be properly circulated. Some vascular lesions are so tiny that they are not visible under normal conditions. Others, such as varicose leg veins can be quite prominent.
Spider veins vs. Varicose veins
Spider veins are small red or blue vessels visible within the skin. They are usually found on the leg, face, neck, or chest. Varicose veins are dilated and ropy appearing blue vessels visible under the skin. Varicose veins are often 1/4 inch or larger in diameter. Varicose veins typically cause pain, swelling, fatigue and occasionally more serious complications.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy was developed over 75 years ago is one of the most prevalent treatments for spider and varicose veins. During the treatment, a sclerosing agent is injected into the vein through a tiny needle. Upon injection, the solution replaces the blood in the vein, causing irritation and corrosion to the walls of the vessel. The body then initiates the natural healing process and the vein begins to shrink and eventually disappear. This treatment can last from 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of veins treated in a particular session. During the consultation, you will be advised as to the number of treatments necessary to achieve desired results.
What is the Sclerotherapy treatment like?
The veins in question will be examined and reviewed with you by Dr. Naegele. A treatment strategy will then be decided upon to eradicate these veins. You may be asked to stand while the problem veins are marked and photographed. The sclerosing agent will then be injected into the targeted veins. No anesthesia is required because discomfort is minimal. You will need to wear support hose or a supportive wrap for a short period of time following treatment. This precautionary post-treatment measure will apply compression to the treated vessels to prevent recurrence.
What results will I see from Sclerotherapy?
Steady improvement in the look of the veins will be noticed. Many patients experience 60% to 80% clearance. During the consultation, you will be advised as to the number of treatments that will be necessary to achieve desired results.
How many Sclerotherapy treatments will it take?
Several treatments may be required to achieve the optimum result. In some cases, as few as two or three treatments will fulfill the desired outcome.
How long will Sclerotherapy last?
Sclerotherapy usually lasts from two to five years – this depends on the size and age of the veins. After this period of time, most people begin to develop new veins, but the previously treated veins do not reappear.
What are the side effects of Sclerotherapy?
In most cases, you will be able to resume regular activities immediately. However, excessive standing or vigorous exercise and activities are not advised for 24 to 48 hours. Following treatment, the affected veins may darken and the area may appear bruised. Support hose are worn after treatment. This pressure will help reduce side effects and assist in more effective healing and treatment.
