Spider Vein Treatment

You know the ones. Those pesky, squiggly, vascular nuisances that appear out of nowhere. These veins are benign vascular lesions that are enlarged blood vessels and capillaries, appearing on the surface of the skin as splotches, dots, and wirey little lines. They can show up in a variety of colors ranging from red to blue to purple to green. Weakness in the walls and valves of the veins cause blood to stagnate rather than be properly circulated. Some vascular lesions are so tiny that they are not visible under normal conditions.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy was developed over 75 years ago. It is one of the most prevalent treatments for spider veins. During the treatment, the sclerosing agent Asclera is injected into the vein through a tiny needle. Upon injection, the solution replaces the blood in the vein, causing irritation and corrosion to the walls of the vessel. The body then initiates the natural healing process, and the vein begins to shrink and eventually disappear. This treatment takes from 30 – 45 minutes to administer, depending on the number of veins treated in a particular session.

During the consultation, you will be advised as to the number of treatments necessary to achieve desired results.

What causes Spider Veins?

There are many lifestyle and hereditary factors that cause spider veins. The most common lifestyle factors include being large in stature, trauma to the area, age, and hormone fluctuations.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS

Dr. Naegele is a top ranked aesthetic injector. In fact, she has been recognized as a Platinum Plus injector by the manufacturers of Botox & Juvederm.

What should I expect during a Sclerotherapy treatment?

If it is determined that you are a candidate for sclerotherapy, a treatment plan will be outlined. It should be noted that it usually takes 2-4 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart to achieve desirable results. The skin is cleansed, and the sclerosing agent is injected into the targeted veins. No anesthesia is required because discomfort is minimal. You will need to wear support hose or a supportive wrap for a short period of time following the treatment. This precautionary post-treatment measure will apply compression to the treated vessels to help them heal and prevent recurrence.

What results will I see from Sclerotherapy?

A steady improvement in the look of the veins will be noticed over time. Many patients experience 60% to 80% clearance and sometimes more.

Spider Vein vs Varicose Veins

Spider Veins vs. Varicose Veins

Spider veins are small, red, or blue vessels. They are usually found on the legs, face, neck, or decollete. Varicose veins are dilated and ropy blue vessels. Varicose veins are larger in diameter and typically cause pain, swelling, fatigue, and occasionally more serious complications. Spider veins are just an eyesore. At Oxford Medical Aesthetics & Laser, we treat spider veins with the medicine Asclera. If you have varicose veins, we will refer you to one of our colleagues that specializes in that treatment as it is very different.

Dr. Naegele is an absolutely wonderful physician and a great person as well. She’s informative, humorous, intelligent, highly skilled, and wants the best for each patient. I highly recommend her!!

How can I prevent new Spider Veins from developing?

If you are prone to developing spider veins, you will probably continue to have some new ones pop up in the future, but there are a few lifestyle adjustments you can make to help reduce the frequency of new ones appearing and prevent existing ones from getting worse:

  • Stay mobile. Everything improves with exercise.
  • Maintain a healthy and stable weight.
  • Avoid clothing that reduces circulation (unless you have to wear compression garments for medical purposes).
  • Reduce or limit alcohol consumption.
  • Elevate your legs for a short period of time, several times a day.
  • Get massages on a regular basis and/or try dry brushing every day.

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

Generally, sclerotherapy is tolerated well by most patients.  However, it is not a “painless” procedure as the treatment does require a small needled to target those tiny vessels that are causing the spider veins.  We do offer some topical numbing cream to assist patients with this procedure but most individuals do not require this additional step.
